International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

Today is 23 May, International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.

Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by protracted, obstructed labour. Left untreated, it can lead to infection, disease, leaking of urine and faeces, infertility, skin infections, kidney disorders and even death, if untreated.

Obstetric fistula is preventable; it can largely be avoided by delaying the age of first pregnancy; the cessation of harmful traditional practices; and timely access to obstetric care.
